Farewell To A WNBA Icon
Originally published May 5, 2024
Candace Parker, a WNBA legend, officially announced her retirement from the league one week ago. She played in the WNBA for 16 years racking up 3 championships, 2 MVP awards and 7 All-Star game appearances. She loved the game and the fans loved her but an article explains her reasons for ending her career.
She recently led her team, the Las Vegas Aces, to a championship in 2023. It was the perfect way to finish a great career. She’s also suffered many injuries throughout her career that made her feel it was time to stop. Playing a game as physical as basketball has its ups and downs, but her overall career has made a huge impact on the WNBA as a whole.
Parker’s reputation within basketball is somewhat rocky. Some fans believe she is one of the greatest WNBA players of all time, while others think she’s overrated. This larger-than-life reputation has led to some amazing things for the former player, such as her broadcasting contract with NBA on TNT that started in 2018.
Becoming a female broadcaster of a male-dominated sport is a difficult thing to do. I think it’s extremely impressive that Parker was able to break her way into the boys’ club and continue doing so year after year. The same article explains that she plans to continue broadcasting after retirement and has started her production studio. She loves to broadcast NBA games and none of it would be possible without her reputation within women’s basketball.
As a globally known player with a high basketball IQ, many fans respect her and want to hear what she has to say about the games. Even though not everyone loves her, I think people are willing to listen to her which landed her the job. By showing her fan base her impressive knowledge of basketball she gained respect in the public eye. Her dedication to the game has broadened the scope of women in broadcasting and will hopefully inspire the next generation of women broadcasters.
For me, Candace Parker was who I wanted to be as a kid. I tried to emulate her talent on the court in my game. Through the love that people like me have for her, she can continue her basketball passion in broadcasting. I will miss watching her play but I’m excited to see how her impact on basketball continues through a career in broadcasting.
