Sabrina Ionescu: The Oregon Duck Who Soared
Originally published May 19, 2024
Making the transition from college basketball to the WNBA can be intimidating. Most people who play in high school don’t make it to the college level, and even fewer see the WNBA. Even after making it to the WNBA, not all players find the success they had in the lower leagues. The WNBA is a completely different game that forces players to sink or swim.
Sabrina Ionescu is an example of someone who rose to the occasion of the WNBA and is still shining today. Along with her play on the court, she’s managed to maintain a loyal fan base and craft a positive image for herself. Here’s how she got to where she is today.
High School
Ionescu defined her high school career through her incredible ability on the court. She ended high school as the number four prospect in the country. “She could shoot; she could pass; she had court vision straight from a Marvel movie” (The Athletic). The article talks about her life growing up where she consistently played against and beat boys. This created her competitive attitude and her constant improvement of her game.
This is the beginning of her reputation as a dominant player who fans love to watch. She loves playing basketball and lets her game speak for itself. Having a basketball foundation built on these principles is a huge help to her finding success in the future.
College – University of Oregon
I may be biased in talking about Ionescu because I’m a fellow Oregon Duck, but her legacy in this school can’t be ignored. She smashed records during her time at Oregon and continued to grow her solid fan base. This article gives a detailed look at Ionescu’s career and shows her impact in numbers:
Before Sabrina: 1,629 fans per game
Freshman year: 2,595 fans per game
Sophomore year: 4,255 fans per game
Junior year: 7,148 fans per game
Senior year: more than 10,000 fans per game
“[Ionescu is] such an incredible ambassador for the game itself. The team is so approachable, that’s why people feel a part of their journey. And she’s very approachable and that tricks down. It’s contagious and infectious.”
The article talks about one fan in particular Ionescu caught the eye of: Kobe Bryant.
“I haven’t seen somebody be able to approach the game the way that she approaches it on a collegiate level. The system that Oregon runs, and how she handles the ball and facilitates opportunities for her teammates, I haven’t seen that. Her competitive spirit and her toughness reminds me a lot of Diana (Taurasi).”
February 24, 2020
The timeline of Bryant and Ionescu’s friendship began about a year before this date when he started coming to Oregon games. He quickly became a mentor for her and helped her craft her game into what it is today. On January 26th, 2020 Bryant tragically died in a helicopter crash with his young daughter. A month later on February 24th, Ionescu did something that solidified her reputation as a competitor under any circumstance.
That morning, she spoke at Bryant’s celebration of life where she detailed their friendship and the legacy he left behind. Later that same day, while battling the flu, Ionescu made history in the Duck’s win against Stanford. She was the first man or woman NCAA player to have 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds in her career. This day speaks to her resilience and love of the game. It made a huge impact on her reputation and is a reason so many fans root for her today.

Ionescu is currently a guard for the New York Liberty where she continues to showcase her athletic ability. She was the first overall pick of the draft in 2020 and has been breaking records ever since. She is a fan favorite and she’s never lost her reputation as approachable and kind.
She was recently quoted talking to first-year WNBA player Caitlin Clark before a game.
“What you did in college was enough, you deserve to still have that confidence when you join the league.”
She has a lot of love for the newcomers in the league and is the same supportive teammate she’s always been.
Ionescu is a good example of someone whose reputation has stayed consistent throughout her career. She’s never changed her competitive spirit and friendly demeanor which is why she’s attracted so many loyal fans. From her days as a Duck to her career with the Liberty, she has crafted a consistent image in the public eye that will stay with her forever.
